SETTLERS HILL GOLF CLUB (630-232-1636)
Chicago Golf Course Review - 5/07/05
Settlers Hill Golf Club is a Bob Lohmann championship design that is known for its good value, friendly staff and
interesting layout. Built on a landfill, this course features scenic views along a rolling terrain and includes holes
that wind around steep hills, through thick woodlands and on open meadows that add a distinctive Scottish
flavor. Golf Digest Places to Play has awarded Settlers Hill with a well deserved rating of 3 1/2 stars out of five...this is a very pretty layout.
Half of the holes have water in play in the form of ponds or crossing streams, and bunkering is understated with
33 sand traps located along side the fairways or greenside. Three sets of tees provide distances and slopes
that measure 6630 yards/130 slope, 6223 yards/126 slope and 4945 yards with a slope rating of 120. Though
this is not an overly long layout, all levels of players will be challenged to hit the correct portions of the doglegs,
and to keep the ball in play on some of the tree and mound-lined fairways. There is generally ample room off the tee, but golfers will be challenged in their short game by greenside bunkers and swales.
The course is well maintained, aesthetically pleasing, and is complimented by a clubhouse with pro shop, snack
bar area with beverages plus hot and cold sandwiches, and practice facilities that include a putting/chipping
green (no driving range). On course marking systems include color coded flags for front, middle and back pin
placements, sprinkler heads that are measured to the center of the green, 150 yard stakes on par fours and
fives, and cart path and fairway markers at 100, 150 and 200 yards. The putting surfaces are medium is size
and mild in undulation. Holes 5 through 7 comprise the best stretch, with water framing the dogleg on five, and creek beds fronting the green complexes on numbers six and seven.
With pricing that tops out at $39 weekdays and $59 weekends (including cart) during the 2005 season, this is
one of South Chicago's better golf values. We certainly recommend it! For more info, visit our page for Settlers Hill Golf Club with direct link to their website by clicking here.
