Chicago golf course review
Harborside International, located just minutes from the Downtown Chicago loop area, features two 18 hole championship courses. "Port" and Starboard were designed by renowned architect, Dick Nugent, to bring the tradition of links golf to Chicago. In the spring of 2017, Harborside underwent a $1.7 million bunker renovation, further highlighting
the natural beauty of Harborside's native areas and wildlife. Both courses have since, been re rated. The courses are regularly rated in Golfweek's Top 50 Best Municipal
Courses in the nation, and in the Top 15 courses in the state of Illinois.
The beautiful clubhouse features a fully stocked pro shop, locker rooms with showers, conference rooms, large dining rooms for banquets, and The Pier At Harborside
Restaurant. The Pier is open Daily for breakfast Lunch and dinner, and includes a full bar. Practice facilities include a targeted grass range, putting green, and short game area
with sand bunkers. There is also a private teaching area for those in need of lessons.
Port Course
Designed in the true links tradition, the Port Course features manicured fairways and wild fescue areas, ample landing areas and strategically placed bunkers. Mounded, uneven
terrain can be found off to the sides of the fairways and greens. For the most part, if golfers find the fairway off the tees, they will enjoy an even lie. The signature hole is #16- A par
3 with a large, detailed, anchor shaped bunker surrounding the front of the green. 16, 17 and 18 finish up around a beautiful lake, providing breath taking views as the round
comes to an end. The Port course opened in 1995, and has since been acclaimed Chicago's top public course.
On course there are yardage markers in the middle of the fairway from 100, 150, and 200 to the center of the green. Colored flags indicate a portside (red flag), or starboard
(green flag) hole location. GPS in carts provide yardages to the pin and hazards on the course, such as water and bunkers. There are a total of 72 sand bunkers situated
greenside and near landing zones and water comes into play in the form of lakes and ponds on 3-holes.
There are 4 sets of tee boxes with a wide range of yardages and slopes. Forward tees are 5164 yards with a slope of 126. 5977 yards with a slope of 124 for men and 136 for
woman from the regular tees. 5997 / 130 from Championship, and 7123 / 136 from tournament. As indicated above, the Port course is a fair test for all skill levels.
